What is a paediatric dentist?

A paediatric dentist takes care of the oral health of young people from babies to adolescents, including those with special care needs. They focus on preventing, early detection and treatment of dental problems according to the most recent and advanced scientific recommendations.

It is not always possible for children to cope while at the dental surgery. However, all children should feel good and relaxed about visiting the dentist and the treatment should result in a pleasant experience and the establishment of trust and confidence lasting forever. The paediatric dentist knows how to examine and treat children and to ensure the approach is tailored on each individual’s needs.

What type of treatment can a paediatric dentist provide?

  • Oral health examination, including caries risk assessments
  • Preventive advice on diet, cleaning, use of fluoride
  • Advice on oral habits such as dummy use, thumb sucking
  • Assessment and early intervention to straightening teeth
  • Restore cavities or other defects on teeth by placing a filling or a crown, or tooth nerve therapy
  • Diagnosis and treatment of gingival (gum) problems as a sole presentation or related to systemic medical problems
  • Treatment of fractured, displaced or knocked out teeth and surrounding bone injuries
  • Treatment for anxious children, who may not be able to cope during the dental visit either due to their age, the complexity of their treatment, previous unpleasant experience etc, under sedation

Why are baby teeth important?

  • Growth and development of the face
  • Chewing and swallowing properly
  • Appropriate speech development
  • Saving the space for the permanent teeth
  • Healthy smile can help with the child’s confidence

Why has my child been referred to a paediatric dentist?

A paediatric dentist has the appropriate academic training in Paediatric Dentistry and has dedicated their practice solely to treat young patients and to look after their oral health from infancy and through the teenage years.

All children need different approaches in dealing with their dental problems, behaviour, guiding their dental growth and development, and helping them avoid future dental problems. The paediatric dentist is best qualified to meet these needs. Your child has been referred for paediatric dentistry as his/her dental needs require a more advanced and specific approach.

What will happen at the first visit?

A thorough dental and medical history followed by an examination including radiographs if possible and necessary, will take place. This is to ensure that the dentist has as much information as possible to make the right treatment plan for your child. She will discuss your child’s dental needs and all the available options and alternative ways of treatment. Preventive advice tailored to your child will be also discussed.

Payment policy

Your child’s initial consultation fee will be £65. At this appointment, any treatment needed will be discussed in full and you will be given an itemised treatment plan listing all costs involved. We do ask for payment to be made at the end of each appointment.
